Digestion and Chiropractic
Reviewed by Dr. Matthew Roller
Did you know that digestion is a nervous system function? Every signal that tells each organ what to do travels through the spine — so when those signals are disrupted, the gut struggles to do its job.
Signs your child’s digestion may need support
- Straining, crying, or pulling their legs up when trying to pass a stool
- Infrequent bowel movements, or stools that are hard, dry or painful
- A firm, bloated or tender belly
- Frequent gas, or spitting up and reflux in babies
- Arching, squirming or fussing during and after feeds
- Poor sleep that settles once their tummy settles
- Low appetite, or discomfort that shows up an hour or two after eating
If several of these sound familiar, it is worth having your child assessed.
What parents typically notice:
- More regular, comfortable bowel movements
- Reduced gas and bloating
- Less fussiness or discomfort after meals (especially in infants)
- Better sleep — because a comfortable gut means a calmer baby
- Improved overall mood and energy
Every child is different, and results vary — but many families notice changes within the first few visits.
What to expect at a first visit
- Brief health history with Dr. Roller
- Head to toe musculoskeletal exam
- A gentle, age-appropriate adjustment the same day
- Aftercare expectations, so you know what comes next
Your child is adjusted on the first visit. There is no second appointment booked just to come back and be given a plan and a price.
How it works
When there’s tension or misalignment along that pathway — especially in the mid-back or lower cervical spine — those signals get disrupted. The gut slows down, speeds up, or just doesn’t work the way it should.
This is especially common in babies. The birth process, even a smooth one, can create tension in a newborn’s nervous system that shows up days later as colic, reflux, or constipation. In older kids, growth spurts, injuries, and posture habits can create similar interference.
Chiropractic care doesn’t treat digestion directly. We remove the interference so your child’s nervous system can do what it was designed to do.
What the research shows
From weekly enemas to daily bowel movements on his own
A 2025 case study followed a 2-month-old boy with severe constipation since birth, who needed weekly enemas to pass a stool. His chiropractor found restricted motion in his upper neck, linked to a difficult forceps delivery that had also required 10 days in the NICU. After gentle, infant-specific adjustments he was passing stools on his own within three weeks, and by eleven weeks was going daily without help, with full movement restored to his neck.
