Rib dysfunction in children
Let’s talk about rib dysfunction. A rib out of place is more common in kids than parents realize. Anything from coughing, rough playing, sports, to falling can easily cause a rib to be out of place. That’s why at Kids Only Chiropractic we know the signs and indications of rib displacement and can help your child get to feeling better again.
What is Rib Dysfunction?
The ribs attach to the spine in the mid-back through small joints designed to glide with every breath and movement. When one of these joints malfunctions — sometimes called a rib subluxation the surrounding muscles immediately tighten to protect the area. It’s a mechanical issue that chiropractic is uniquely suited to address.
Signs you might notice:
- Sharp pain with breathing
- Mid back pain
- Sharp pain that can radiate around your rib cage, or pierce through.
- Pain when bending
- Pain with activity
- Clicking or popping sensation around the rib area
Why Chiropractic care helps
When a rib joint loses its normal motion, the body does exactly what it’s designed to do — the surrounding muscles tighten up to protect the area, it hurts to breathe, bend, or move. The problem is that muscle relaxers, rest, and pain medication don’t fix the underlying cause.
A chiropractic adjustment restores normal movement to that joint directly. Once the rib is moving the way it should, the muscles no longer have a reason to guard — they relax, the inflammation settles, and breathing becomes easier. For most kids, the relief is noticeable within the first one or two visits.
Commonly asked questions
Q: How did my child’s rib get like this?
A: It can happen from a sports impact, a fall, coughing, sneezing, or even something as simple as an awkward twist. Heavy backpacks, poor posture, and repetitive movements in activities like swimming or gymnastics are also common culprits. Sometimes there’s no single obvious cause — it builds gradually.
Q: Could this be something more serious, like a heart or lung problem?
A: Rib pain can mimic cardiac or pulmonary symptoms, which is why a proper exam matters. Dr. Roller screens for any signs that warrant a referral before beginning care. Your child’s safety always comes first — if the pain is musculoskeletal in origin, chiropractic is an excellent fit.
Q: Will it come back?
A: It can, especially in active kids or athletes. Dr. Roller will typically recommend a follow-up plan to fully resolve the restriction and address any postural or movement patterns that may have contributed to it in the first place.
Q: Do you take insurance
A: No, insurance companies make it too hard to bill and get claims paid. We work directly with our practice members to keep care almost at cost.
